Sugar Loaf Mountain, Wales

Dog Walks: Sugar Loaf Mountain Wales

This Route up Sugar Loaf Mountain Wales is return by same/similar path

Start/Finish:  National Trust Car Park, located adjacent to Sugar Loaf as per directions below.

Directions: from the A40 Abergavenny to Brecon Road, go past Nevill Hall Hospital on your left, and after approximately 200m take 1st turning right into a lane, then take 1st left into another lane, then 1st left again, go past Sugar Loaf Vineyards on the right, then follow this road all the way and will eventually lead to the National trust car park.  The road leads directly into and through the NT car park.  There are terrific views down into the valley from the car park.

Parking: National Trust Car Park

Public Conveniences: Abergavenny, in car park adjacent to Tourist Information Centre

Terrain: Mainly grass land, moor land, grassy tracks, some stoney tracks also, steady inclines, steeper nearing the summit, and obviously the reveres on the return downward journey, so sadly I would recommend that this is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Distance: Approximately 3.2 Miles,

Please keep your dog under strict control as there are livestock grazing these areas.

Walk Route for Sugar Loaf Mountain Wales:

Standing in the National Trust Car Park with your back to the valley and you looking up the hill, take one of the paths leading up the hill away from the car park.  Once to the higher ground you will see the Summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain Wales.  Here at this point I recommend that you Do Not do what we did 1st time and take the most direct route to the summit!  We went straight down the valley and up the other side; this was a tough task for me back then!

Instead…..

If you take the path that takes the left fork out of the car park, you will climb steadily, passing a corner of a stone wall on the left, then on a little further to pass another corner of a stone wall, this path then continues over open moorland taking a left arc route up to the summit.

Alternatively, if you take the wider path straight up from the car park, you will meet a cross roads of tracks, here turn left, this will take you parallel to the summit, and will then also navigate you in an arc up the left side to the summit.

The return route for us, was either of the above.

It is hard to get lost up here as the tracks are well worn, and in our three visits there have always been plenty of other walkers going to and from the summit.

Although this is not a particularly difficult walk, we have experienced how quick the weather can change up here from glorious sunshine to a biting wind and serious rain…..so go prepared!

There are sheep and ponies, and cattle running free up here, so please ensure your dog is kept under strict control.
